Carrer Venerable
ENG: Street del Venerable we can see portals, Gothic windows and noble coats of arms sculpted on the facades, and we will also find the birthplace of Venerable Joan Baptista Bertran, born in 1530, who died with a reputation for holiness in l'Alcora in 1601.
The Venerable Joan Baptista Bertran is one of the greatest glories of Atzeneta del Maestrat. Born in the village in 1530, he was the son of a wool carder. After studying Germanic in Traiguera, he left in 1550 to study at the University of Valencia. Here he made friends with his cousin Sant Lluís Bertran. Ordained a priest, he established his ministry in his native town. After taking care of the parish of Benlloch spiritually, in 1575 he was appointed rector of l'Alcora, where he died with a reputation for holiness in 1601. In l'Alcora he is professed great affection. Considered the prototype of the “cure of souls” that emerged after the Council of Trent, he dedicated himself to “praying, teaching, preaching, sharing goods with needs, administering the sacraments, comforting, healing, visiting the sick and being the father of souls ”. His reputation for sanctity promoted a beatification process in 1642, which was never concluded.
A precious canvas is preserved in his native parish of Atzeneta, where he represents him in prayer before the image of Christ Crucificat and the Virgin of Dolors. The painting, by an anonymous Valencian artist, was made shortly in 1626, the year in which the Venerable's nephew, Pere Molés.
