ENG: The parish church of San Bartomeu, built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries on the old church of the fourteenth century from which the robust bell tower remains, is in the Renaissance style. It has great artistic value due to its extraordinary baroque altar, its Renaissance sculptural group and its pieces of goldsmiths of great liturgical detail.
Its interior has a single nave with side chapels and baptistery, highlighting the baroque altarpiece of the main altar, made of gilded and polychrome wood, which is presided over by the central image of Saint Bartomeu, patron saint of the town. Another jewel on the altar is the ornamentation of the Solomonic columns and the images of La Purísima, Santa Llúcia, Santa Bàrbara, San Cristóbal and San Roque.
The eight altars of the church are also very interesting, due to the polychrome wooden altarpieces, highlighting the Christ of Mercy, from 1697, the Virgin of Roser and the Virgin Mary of Bethlehem. The Virgin Mary of Bethlehem is a 15th century sculpture of great beauty and harmony that breaks with the medieval rigidity in the dress and in the eyes of the Virgin Mary, despite maintaining the archaic elements of exaltation of the "Throne of God".
The Communion Chapel is attached to the parish temple, taking advantage of an old building. You can see a smooth cross between rosettes from the late 16th century. The parish church preserves valuable pieces of the sacred heritage, such as the altarpiece of San Juan Baptista, altarpieces of Baptism and Saint Onofre, tables of the flagellation, with fragments of an altarpiece from the 15th century. There is also an extraordinary collection of baroque sacred art, with chalices, processional crosses, reliquaries, etc.
The organ, of Baroque origin, has been restored and has an extraordinary sound. Also noteworthy is a baptismal font, made of stone and originally from the beginnings of the parish church, and a flag from the battle of Lepanto.
The entire complex of the Atzeneta del Maestrat parish church looks like a baroque museum.
